Does VPN software affect your internet speed?
People use VPN software for a variety of reasons, but the most common are to protect their privacy and to gain access to content that is blocked in their location. But does the use of VPN software lower your speed?
What is VPN software
VPN software is short for virtual private network. It is a type of software that creates a secure connection over the internet between your device and a server. This allows you to access the internet as if you were physically located in the location of the server. This can be used to bypass geographic restrictions or to protect your privacy when using public Wi-Fi.
VPN software exists out of 3 parts:
- The VPN client
- The VPN connection
- The VPN server
The speed of a VPN connection is also build-up out of that 3 things, client, connection and the server.
VPN connection speed
The speed of the connection depends on the bandwidth of the connection and the length of the connection. When your VPN server is in Japan and the VPN client in New york the connection is 10.000km long. That will give some latency on the line.
Encryption Quality
The quality of the encryption can also affect the speed of the VPN connection. If the encryption is weak, it can be easily broken and will result in a slower connection. If the encryption is strong, it will take longer to break and will result in a faster connection.
VPN Server
At the end of the line, there is a VPN server. The function of the VPN server is to decrypt the data and give access to the rest of the internet. That server is used by multiple VPN clients. The more VPN clients connected to the VPN server the slower the speed.
VPN speed
Overall, it is evident that a VPN connection affects internet speed in one way or another. The main factors that affect the VPN connection are the distance between the client and server, as well as the encryption quality. However, other factors such as the number of clients connected to the server can also have an impact on speed.
Most of the VPN services has connection speed that high on their priority list that it will not slow down your use of it.
